GPS accessory - goto do they help?

As a visually disabled newb, I am struggling (because of eyesight) to align my Celestron 127 slt. Would the GPS help to automate this process, or does it just eliminate one of the steps in the procedure?

Despite these issues, managed to get a look at Jupiter and some of it's moons tonight. does anybody know what these accessories cost?

All the GPS dongle will do is download the correct time and location to the 'scope, saving you the effort of inputting them manually.

You will still have to do a star alignment to tell the 'scope where it is pointing in the sky.

My friend got a GPS module for his Celestron Nexstar 4se and I think he paid in the region of £90! Which IMO is mad! just to put in the date and time and location seems a bit overkill! I can think of a million things i would spend £90 on for my scope before I bought a GPS module!

Conclusion..IMO waste of hard earned cash!!

Thanks for the replies. I thought it would only determine your position, I had this vague hope it may automate the process. As you say, £90 just to find out where you garden is is overkill!

Hi gemini, if you can get used to a few stars and just use those for alignment purposes that may help.

Cheers BFG, my problem is that I can't see the stars very well until they are magnified! hence the alignment problem, will have to rope the wife in....
