A question about M31.

I have wondered about this for yrs and never read an definitive answer to it.

My question is:

When you observe/image M31, the dust lanes that are visible.........

Are they on the side of the galaxy closest to us or are they on the other side of the galaxy?

Sorry for such a silly question but it really has been bugging me.
