Best way to control my Canon 450D

Im planning using live view for Goto Sync and sorting out focus, so this will be via USB.

but as for taking the images would it be better to use a serial adapter? or just use the USB controls or both?

USB for both unless you want to use "proper" mirror lock (with APT) then you will need the serial shutter lead...

I have never bothered with mirror lock for DSO work...

A little off topic and slightly digressing ....

I am wondering about doing similar through USB for solar photography and using the camera control of Imagesplus for my 5DMkII but have yet to try the remote focus control - have you any experience with doing this in Imagesplus. Is it worth the learning curve or are there better solutions out there.

No experience of ImagesPlus...

I either use the Eos Remoteutils (free) or APT with multiple camera setup (Bargain of the century)....

Ivo (yoddha) is doing an amazing job with APT www.astroplace.net you dont get the image processing that you do with Imagesplus but for camera control its great.. I have had it running three cams from the came laptop...
