A friend has a basic night vision scope that is optically rubbish but certainly shows a massively amplified image that is pretty clear in the central 25% or so of the FOV. M31 was v bright and the milky way was visible despite moonlight. I reckon somehting like this would be fun provided it had half-way decent optics.
