Meade 102 achro

Recommended Posts

hi all , i have a meade ds102 achromat ( ota only)with a reasonable replacement focuser , what if any mods could i do? , perhaps use it as a solar scope , or a piggy back on my diy dob ? or any other suggestions ,i have had a look at the moon through it resting the end on a wall and there is some purple fringeing , that is with a cheap unbranded 10mm plossel eyepiece, the only eypiece i have at present so i am not sure if a better ep would improve things , any ideas, comments, feed back welcome, regards Tony:confused:

I would certainly keep it. Get a sheet of Baader solar film and make a filter, or if funds allow invest in a Herschel Wedge for great solar views. For night time views there are a variety of "minus violet" filters out there that can damp down the colour fringeing to better levels. That done, it should be a great planetary and lunar scope. Mountwise I imagine an EQ3 or a Giro style mount would provide plenty stable viewing.

(Better eyepieces are always an improvement too...)
