White square tick box?

What is the purpose of the white square tick box that appears besides some of my posts?

Hi Steve,

I think it's there for quick editting of the boards say someone filled it with Spam and the post's were mixed up with proper post's it would be easier to delete the Spam and so forth. Also moving post's etc etc.
