Couple of noob questions about scope types

Recommended Posts

I know that for viewing, a reflector is better for DSO and a refractor is better for closer objects. But when it comes to imaging, how relevant is this? I've seen some amazing images of DSO's taken with a very high focal ratio refractor. Is it just about the quality, and the specific scope type isn't overly important? I'm a bit confused about the huge difference in price too. What makes a £6000 8" aperture scope so much better than a £1000 one? Is it just the quality of the optics that makes it more sensitive?

My reason for asking is that I've been looking for a scope to start imaging and was thinking a Celestron C9.25-SGT XLT would be a good choice but I don't want to end up disappointed in the results. Is this a good allrounder or would the money be better spent on something different? I'm going to read the book "Making Every Photon Count' soon, but I was just curious about this in the mean time.

Thanks!

Hi SMUlx

That is a big question you've asked, Imaging is a whole new ball game to visual as I'm finding out, especially DSO's. my advice is to go along to your nearest astronomy society and talk to the guy's there, they will have the nouse to point you in the right direction.

Hi

Are you enjoying imaging or have you not started yet? I know there's a lot to it, I've made sure that book is next on my reading list as I'm eager to learn all about it. These are just a few things I was curious about at the moment though. I'm not expecting someone to type an essay or anything, just a brief opinion on the things I mentioned will be enough to satisfy my curiosity for now :o
