Observing NGC 6397 in Ara

Using my little Skywatcher 76mm dob, I was able to observe this superb globular cluster in Ara at 60x mag with 10mm Celestron Ultima eyepiece and 2x GSO barlow. Able to resolve outlying stars in the cluster but not down to the core. It would be an easy target with a larger scope. The core is very prominent and condensed. Seeing is very good-about 9/10.

Have you checked out NGC6752 in Pavo ?? Very close in the sky to NGC6397. From here (Christchurch NZ) not to badly placed at the mo.

Been through Brisbane once a few years back on my way to the Gold Coast had no optical equipment with me but was interesting seeing more northern constellations. Still I don't think the deep southern sky can be matched !!

I must confess that I admire globular clusters. We are very blessed with what is available to us down here. It helps that I can observe them ( to a degree..) from a suburban yard. I need to get to some dark sky sites and try a census of how many globs are visible.
