Best Solar Filter for Imaging...?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm looking to try some solar imaging using my Megrez 72. I'm torn between the Baader film and the Thousand Oaks. Does anyone out there have any experience or preference of either of these (or prefers another...?)

Many thanks.

The Thousand Oaks orange colouring is a severe handicap to imaging .... if you really like it visually, try an orange filter with Baader solar film. My experience is that the Baader film is also better optically - less quality loss and less light scatter.

If you want to do imaging (and not visual) try to get the "photographic" Baader film, it lets through 16x as much light so you get much shorter exposures allowing you to "freeze" the seeing more easily. However it is unsafe to use visually without significant extra filtering.
