Milky way....

Hey guys, only ever seen the milky way once, and want to see it again, any pointers?

Would i be wasting my time this time of year? I know the usual; dark skies, no moon etc etc but i promised my girlfriend that id show her the milky way and tonight, or even this weekend seems perfect for it!

Any pointers or info would be great, many thanks

the milky way band runs through several constellations, though one of the best areas is cygnus in the north east, and yep you'll need some dark skies to make it visible with the naked eye
