Mars over exposed

Been trying to take a few images tonight of Mars. I'm using a neximage/LX90.

Couldn't find a setting that wasn't over exposed.

I finally got a half decent picture with a barlow, what am i doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not relying on auto exposure, are we? The algorithms don't work when the lit object fills such a small area of the frame. Use manual exposure, start with a long exposure (say 1/4 sec) & reduce it until detail appears & nothing is obviously saturated (solid white) ... if you have a "live view" histogram in your capture software, use it, aim for nothing above the 3/4 point (you need some leeway for sharpening).

I fear that i may have been, the software I'm using is amcap, comes with the neximage. Is there something better or is it just a matter of fine tuning?

I don't have a lot of experience with imaging so it's all abit trail and error at the moment.
