Laptop Batteries - how to extend their life??

Why is it that some Laptop batteries seem to last forever and some die quickly?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, over two years old and the battery still works great.

I also have a six year old Acer Aspire 5670 and the batteries only seem to last 9 months if that.

Are there any tricks to keeping the battery alive ( I know about removing it when using power for extended periods....)
