Iridium flare

Hi all

Looking north last night at about eleven(ish) just below and to the right of polaris saw a dim slowmoving object pop into view through the orange glare - underneath which is the brightly lit sprawl that is birmingham and all the towns inbetween. The object got brighter and brighter then dimmed at the same rate. The whole thing took about 3-5 seconds. Was this my first ever Iridium flare?

If it was moving S-N or N-S, it almost certainly was. You can check at heavens-above.com for the Iridium flares of the last 48 hours to confirm which one it was. You will have to sign on and enter your location information first. It's not difficult.
