processing planets

Recommended Posts

You shouldn't need to use PS for anything when processing planet images. Everything you need (noise reduction, levels, sharpening, colour adjustment) is in Registax.

If you find yourself needing to "despeckle" then you haven't shot enough frames ... you need more as you turn the gain up.

Hi Toby,

Are you doing seperate RGB frames or a one shot colour image ie toucam? Like brian said if your finding noise in your image you need more frames stacked.

Approx 1600 for Saturn (as its dimmer) 600 ish for Jupiter (as it much brighter) but you do need to limit your expoures because you get blurring due to the fast rotation. Mars is pretty much the same as Saturn (its relativley bright , most of the time) and blurring isn`t such an issue. HTH

Hi Toby

There are some excellent tutorials on processing planetary images out in 'interweb land. '

Try these for starters.

THE FIRMAMENT - Solar System and Deep Sky webcam images

Webcam Astrophotography Tutorial for Planets

Planetary Imaging and Image Processing - IceInSpace

For noise reduction, the Noise Ninja PS plug-in is excellent

Noise Ninja: The gold standard for image noise reduction

There are lots of other cheaper alternatives.

Martin Mobberley's excellent book on lunar and planetary webcam imaging is highly recommended.

I hope these help
