SUNSPOT SUNSET: For the past two weeks, giant sunspot 898 delighted observers as it dramatically crackled and fragmented. Now it's about to vanish entirely. The sun's rotation is carrying the spot over the sun's western limb, out of sight.

Above: On July 1st, "sunspot 898 was clearly visible to the naked eye due to the filtering effect of atmospheric haze over the Irish Sea," says UK photographer Alan King.
