Webcam and DSS

Probably a silly question, but I have been looking at DSS as people on SGL seem to like it. The site talks about using TIFF files and FITS files. Does that mean that I won't be able to use it with the AVI files that I get from my webcam?

Ive only used DSS occaisionaly but I dont think it can load AVI's

Maybe you could use some software to extract the frames from your video ?

For AVI's presumably you are talking about the moon or a planet, in which case, you want to use Registax to stack the frames in the AVI.

Thanks for your input, guys.

Currently using registax - moon, planets, double stars. Now I have an SC modified one, I am hoping to get some star clusters, and as everyone seems to rave about DSS, thought I would have a look. Couldn't see how I could load an AVI, but thought it worth asking. Will keep DSS on back burner until I get a 'proper' CCD camera .... and I'm not placing any bets on how long I will be able to hold off that little purchase ...

I think it may be worth looking at the capture software as that will determine the capture format. WxAstroCapture will capture to either AVI or FITS... DSS will take FITS, so that would work with the LX mod.

Thanks, John, that is a really helpful pointer. I have just started trying WxAC. Tried K3CCD first with LX and found it a bit on the complicated side for me, so if I investigate FITS on WxAC ....

I think it's camera options, then on the first screen a drop down at the bottom, will say AVI, select fits instead... I might be wrong, I'm saying that from memory... I don't have it on this machine. Good luck though and post up the results.
