Filters-the very least we need to know.

I am struggling to find information about the various filters and their uses for viewing. It would be really great if somebody could write a little guide for us beginners in a similar vein to the excellent eyepieces thread.

Perhaps if possible, narrowing things down to a small basic selection of essentials, for the beginner to then build upon?

A bit cheeky I know, but I am sure many people would find it very useful and it would also save on the same basic questions being asked and answered repeatedly.
