Cheap Lens-coma!

Recommended Posts

Took this photo of north Cygnus last night.

Canon 5D

Jupiter-9 85 f/2 wide open

16 subs, 1.6 sec

iso 1600

Stacked in DSS, resized in Picture Window pro 5

I hope you can see how horrible the coma is, if you can't I'll do a crop.

Agreed.

I bought the thing on spec, it was only £40, so not a big hole in the bank-balance. The original plan was to use it for cine work if I bought a 5DII. That plan is on hold, and I've found the lens to be a bit soft, even stopped down for conventional photography.

My Leitz 180mm Apo gives geometrically perfect stars wide-open.:)

I was originally looking for a Leica 90 f/2, unfortunately by the time I had the funds, Ffordes had sold the last one they had. I'll have to wait and see if any more come in.

Meanwhile I may have some serious house-repair bills coming up, so non-essentials will have to go on hold :)
