The actual impacts happened out of sight of us, but I watched rhe areas hit rotate into view in my 12"f6 reflector. The effects were visible at the top of Jupiters atmosphere, and were quite large, and very easy to see. A small telescope would have shown them too.

I just hope the earth never has to endure a strike like that.

Of course Jupiters gravity itself was responsible for the Comet breaking up into so many pieces, resulting in the multiple impacts next time around.
