SEESTAR S50 - UPDATE FROM SAMSUNG FOR SMART PHONE PHOTO ENHANCEMENT.

Recommended Posts

On 19th I used the Seestar for a few subjects.  I had installed the latest Samsung phone update about an hour before going outside.  At the end of my session I discovered the Seestar hadn't sent copies of any of my pics to my phone!  After a degree of panic and angst  it was easily fixed with advice from helpful SGL members on the SEESTAR S50 thread.

However there was a sliver lining to all this.  I only enhance my Seestars pics using my Samsung phone's  image manipulation software, it's basic but OK, it's enough for my needs.  However, when I opened it up for  a bit of manipulation, I went to 'save as a copy' a pic of M22 and it offered me the chance to save it with increased resolution.  A new feature.  I hesitated and then went for it, the result was quite amazing in my view as a non-imager.  The first two pics below are  without the increase in resolution,  and the third   (close crop) with it. What a difference!

I just though this might be of interest to other Seestar users who like myself are not traditional imagers who dont wish to use specialised astro imaging software.

Seester continues to impress we with what it can do - and I'm no expert 🙂.

IMHO, the artefacts in the background don't look too good. I don't operate on the Seestar S50, so I'm not an expert, but the picture is better without this feature.

I suggest you hold it further away and the background may not bother you so much.

It doesn't look at all like it increased the resolution which might be possible by microshifting the imaging chip between images.  Instead, it seems to have just increased the gain to make dimmer stars brighter.  However, it blows out the highlights (brighter stars) into oversized blobs.  I'd be more impressed if the DSP algorithm had selectively increased gain on only the dimmest stars while leaving the highlights and background noise as-is.  Basically, a form of HDR photography.

Tbh I find the default editor in Google photos works well, Snapseed is another option.

It's surprisingly effective.  Found it really good on the moon and it can do a decent job on dso provided the data is okay quality.
