Transportable tripod/mount.

Recommended Posts

I am travelling to South Wales in a few weeks to visit my brother. If the sky is clear then it is fantastic to observe with my 80 mm Equinox refractor. Can anyone recommend a reasonably sturdy tripod/mount assembly that can be carried with me on the train?

I find that most photographic tripods are too wobbly. I accept that a transportable tripod will shake to some degree. But what is the best compromise?

A Vixen Porta II is quite light. I found the Porta I coped with my 102mm F/6.5 ED quite well.

The AZ-5 or AZ-4 on an aluminium tripod might do the job too.

Thick leg CF Innorel tripods, damping performance is very close to the Berlebach Uni I've got, but much lighter and can extend much taller for far more comfortable viewing, also got a very short CF tripod which is similar but you have to be on those short collapsible seats to get low enough for a comfort view (the benefit is the tripod collapsed is around a forearms length). Mount head, not too sure, mines a Tecnosky Cubo, it's a brick weight sort of solid lump of metal.
