TAL 2M mount issue

Hi,

Just bought a lovely Tal2M, but it appears to have a part missing on the mount. Does anyone know what belongs in this threaded hole? The axis moves freely otherwise and is unusable ☹️ I've tried a standard 5mm bolt and it does nothing.

Thanks!

Andrew

Mine has nothing there in the way of a knob.  I will have to take a closer look to see what it is for.  I think it may be to give access to a screw and I think there is a cover screw in the opening if I remember correctly.    I have never had to mess with it so I don't think there is much to worry about.   If the axis moves freely you may need to adjust the clutch in the RA drive housing.

hi Andrew, the Dec axis housing screws onto the end of the RA shaft and i think there’s meant to be a little grub screw accessed through that hole to lock it but truthfully you need to really tighten the housing into the shaft to prevent it coming loose. Have a look at this thread where i serviced my crunchy mount and i ended up shimming the shafts/bearings so i could tighten that joint without damaging the bearing races.

There’s a link in there to another thread with some pdfs of a tear down by Andyh too which might be clearer
