250P on a EQ5 delux mount

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Getting a new scope after having several largish dobs in the past as I'm looking for something more portable that won't break my back !

Would a 250P on a EQ5 delux mount work? or is it too heavy for that mount, if it would work would a GOTO also work later on?

Thanks in advance for any advice\thoughts

It will be too heavy. I have a Vixen GP mount from which the EQ-5 is derived and its recommended load is 7kg using a 200mm reflector or cat. You could probably get away with 8-9kg but over that you would be putting too much strain on your mount.

I would recommend a EQ6 for your scope if you want to use a GEM.

If you look at the payload capacity on skywatcher website you can see that 250P weighs 12kg. And the EQ5 mounts can carry only around 9-10 kg. So straightaway this rules it out 😞

You would probably need to go for HEQ6 to allow for extra weight you are likely to add to the train (eg. eyepieces etc.)
