celestron 100 ED refractor

so after almost being set on the 80mm I reckon I could stretch to the 100mm which I have seen for £530. Has anyone used this scope and roughly how long is the tube bearing in mind I was after something portable? Thanks again. (Advice so far has been great)

100mm refractor is portable. Most will say go for the larger aperture. 100mm gives more than 50% light gathering than the 80mm.

if its the the f9 celestron 100ed its a very long tube to be honest having had one and not what i would call portable

what focal length is the scope ?

I used to have a Skywatcher ED100 which has the same optics. It was just about the lightest 4" refactor I've used and very portable IMHO. I even managed to use it reasonably happily on a lightweight AZ-3 mount although it did shake a bit at high power. I believe that the Celestron 100ED is basically the same. Superb scopes optically

Depends on definition of portable, I consider my 120ED portable.

More so than a 10" SNT!!

I'd go with the ED100. Its pretty light and the same width as the ED80, just a bit longer and will be noticeably better on most objects. Like John I had mine on a AZ3 and it coped OK at low-med power, a CG-5 would be great match for the scope.

thanks Gaz OC. I see you have a 150mm f5 refractor. What have you got and how well does it work? I was considering a Startravel 150 or 120 but was out off by reports of fringing and thought an ED at a smaller apeture moght be better

The StarTravel fringes badly on the Moon and planets particularly at high powers, its not THAT intrusive on most DSOs but if you wanted 6"-8" of aperture for that sort of money I'd go with a 8" Newt on the CG5.
