Pelican/North American neb camera orientation.

Sometimes getting the camera in the correct orientation to image a certain target is a pain so I'm going to be lazy! 😊 Can I ask, if I want to image the pelican nebula in portrait, would it be best to have the camera sensor in either the portrait or landscape position!? Or any other crazy angle? I'm after covering it nicely head to toe! It's a shame the astronomy tools field of view calculator doesn't give you a correct orientation to go by.

If your using a refractor then if your camera is 'upright' in the home position, then the top and bottom will be parallel with the right ascension grid lines. And if you rotate the camera 90° so it's on its 'side' then the top and bottom of the sensor will be parallel with the declination grid lines.

Camera upright with RA lines top to bottom

Thanks for the info, Yeah I'm using a refractor and a CCD mono camera, so if I'm reading you right, have the sensor in the portrait orientation (on its side) in the park position and I'm good to go? Is that an app you have used to show the above!?

Yes it's SkySafari but you can use Stellarium or Carte du Ciel. So if you want to frame like I showed above with top and bottom of the sensor aligned with 44° and 45° then yes, turn the sensor on its side!

Cheers 👍
