I use a celestron 8se and cannon dslr with a shutter release cable I slewed to the lagoon nebula and could see it in my eye piece how you would expect to see it but when I put my camera on and did a test exposure of about 5 seconds I could kinda see the nebula but I got a lot of star trailing even though I had the telescope aligned

What was your focal length; were you polar aligned and was your mount tracking?

You have a alt-az mount, I'm assuming as that's what the celestron SE comes with. 

Likely issue, the mount wasn't tracking. 

Eitherways, you'll be limited to max exposure of ~30 sec, before field rotation becomes an issue!
