M101 Pinwheel Galaxy

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I've recently turned my sights to M101 Pinwheel galaxy and imaged this over 4 nights to get a total exposure time of just over 11 hours. This is the most hours I've spent on an object and it was totally worth it. I will be spending this much time, if not more, imaging objects in the future. I stacked each nights images as I went along to see how it improved with each nights data and it was remarkable the changes I was seeing.

The final image consists of 67 x 600s subs with bias and flats. No darks as I'm using a DSLR and darks have just been adding noise rather than removing it. Images captured using SW Evostar 80ED on SW EQR-6 Pro, guiding with PHD2. Stacked in DSS and processed in photoshop. I've just added Backyard EOS, Gradient XTerminator and the Astronomy Tools Action set so I had a play around with those for this image. What a difference!

Anyway, here is my (current) final image. Comments and suggestions for improvements are welcome!
