Right Ascension, Particularly of the Moon

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out how to transpose the moon on a circle that has been split up into 12 sections (Zodiac Wheel)

Im looking at the moon right now and its right ascension is 6h 50m 13s which says to me on a 24 hour clock it would be in Cancer ( 6hrs from the start of Aries) but the moon is actually in Gemini at the moment.

Heres how ive worked it out:

0-2 hrs Aries

2-4 hrs Taurus

4-6 hrs Gemini <- (moon is actually here)

6-8 hrs Cancer <- (moon is at 6h 50m 13s so my calculation has it here)

Have I misunderstood right ascension? What about it am I getting wrong?

I think it's better to use ecliptic coordinates, not equatorial. The Moon is also not exactly on the ecliptic plane, but this will give you better results than using the celestial equator, which is inclined to the ecliptic by about 23 degrees

Sounding dangerously like astrology to me! 🤪🤪

Not sure if any of these help at all, SkySafari can display the Zodiac constellation boundaries, with overlays if either ecliptic coordinates or equatorial.
