High Power Eyepieces - Target Almach

Recommended Posts

Ok so last night I thought I would give my higher powered eyepieces a quick compare observing Almach.

I used my Takahashi 4mm TOE , Naglers 3-6 & 2-4 & The Vixen 2.4 HR, the scope was the TAK FC 100. DF ?

I have come to the conclusion that all four eyepieces are excellent but they do give a slightly different experience. The Naglers at their higher power  settings do give brighter views than the TOE & the HR. However, the brightness does result in a noticeable loss of colour. This again was also apparent when comparing the HR to the TOE,  the HR was brighter but the TOE delivered the most discrimination between the blue and orange colours of Almach.

As you can imagine there is quite a lot of potential for cross overs in magnification using these four eyepieces, if I had to choose one over the others I would say the HR on this occasion came out very slightly on top.

I have to say I enjoyed switching between the four of them, with magnifications ranging between 360x and 127x, in summary all were pinpoint and vibrant ?

Nice comparison !

I really like my Nagler 2-4 zoom and tend to use it more than my Pentax XW 3.5. Probably thats because of the small form factor of the zoom and it's instant versatility. The XW 3.5 is excellent but it's a tall stack !

When you think how well the Nagler zooms do compared with pretty specialised high power / high res designs you have to tip your hat to Al Nagler :icon_biggrin:

They really are fantastic zooms John and benefit by having the extra versatility of being a zoom and being so compact.  The HR & TOE are no slouches and the zooms hold their own ?

Hi,

I have the 3,5mm Delos, 3mm DeLite and 2,5mm Nagler T6 in this focal length range. I never compared them on a different colored double. Seems to be interesting, I will do this next time.

Uli

I find 100mm of aperture is perfect for colour separation, if you have too much aperture everything seems the same colour at the eyepiece .... ie silver ? The Pentax XW’s seemed to help with colours also but I have not used one in the TAK. The XW 3.5 is also rather large in comparison to the high power specialist eyepieces such as the TOE, HR and Nagler zooms, so I guess this is the same for Delos and the Delites.
