MASUYAMA 35MM- a rare and unusual eyepiece.

Recommended Posts

As a few of you folks may have noticed, i like rare and hard to find eyepieces.

Here's one that just arrived from Australia today. Its a 35mm Masuyama 1.25 inch.

This is one of a line of eyepieces by Dr Masuyama, japan around 1986-1987.

It is a 5 element 2-1-2 grouping eyepiece with 52 degree fov

a big eyepiece, stands 130mm tall!

They are rare on the used market, and have a high reputation for optical excellence, with polish close to the quality of zeiss and beautiful coatings.

The design is most unusual, resembling a pagoda!

The top cap unscrews, and acts like a pupil guide when left in place.

The construction is of high quality and solid with a very dark internal black matt finish.

They were only made for a couple of years, and like Naglers, carried Dr Masuyama's name, not the company name, on the eyepiece.

I'm intending to use this with the zeiss 2x barlow, i'll report when i have chance to test it.

here are a couple of photos.

Thats an unusual one Mike :undecided:

I used to have a Celestron Ultima 35mm which managed a 49 degree FoV so 52 deg is very clever in a 1.25" package. That was an excellent eyepiece I recall.

I'll look forward to your report !.

John
