Celestial Events Heads Up - Guide

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the new Celestial Events forum!

This is a short guide to detail how to use it, along with the new Celestial Events calendar. These instructions will evolve as we go along to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The Celestial Events forum is a specific section to post up about less predictable events which happen at short notice such as:

  • New solar Active Regions
  • Proms about to lift off
  • Super Novae/Novae
  • Close Asteroid passes

The intention is to have these in one place rather than scattered either in the Astro Lounge or the various observing sections. That means that you can subscribe to this forum specifically so that you will be alerted to new content and have the best chance to observe or image the event. You can also post up if you happen to be the first to notice something.

Please note that events I create will be based around London timings and altitudes ie approx 51.2 degrees North. Please make allowances for your location as something low on the horizon from London may well not be visible from further North for example. Similarly, if posting up, please make a note of the location you have calculated it for so others can make the necessary adjustments easily.

Celestial Events Calendar

This is for predictable events which we know are going to happen such as:

  • Lunar and Solar Eclipses
  • Lunar X visibility
  • Meteor Showers
  • Visible GRS transits
  • Shadow transits
  • Occultations
  • Planetary conjunctions/oppositions

As a mod team we will populate this as much as possible, but please do add things that you notice that are missing. They will go into a moderation queue to be approved for entry into the calendar.

You can subscribe to the calendar so that you will be alerted about events created in it so you won't miss anything!

Do drop me a pm if you have any suggestions as to how this might be improved, but otherwise please do enjoy!
