Astrophotography books

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I started AP last December and to be honest I am quite impressed with the results that I managed to get with a dslr from my light polluted back garden but I feel that it's not enough. I would like to go deeper into the science of astrophotography to be able to understand it better and have a knowledge of what and why. I am curently reading lots of articles over the internet but I would find it much easier to read some books. When I started AP I purchaced the "Making every photon count" book which helped me a lot but I want more, I wanna know the scientific approach to it.

I had a look on Amazon and there are quite a few books about AP. I was thinking to start with "The astrophotography manual. A practical and scientific approach to deep sky imaging" second edition by Chris Woodhouse when it's being released on the 13th of October.

I don't know if this book is only about CCD imaging and if it is I would like some books about DSLR imaging too. I found this book "Digital SLR astrophotography (Practical Amateur Astronomy)

 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0521700817/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1505467916&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=dslr+astrophotography+books&dpPl=1&dpID=41ZEVrnfPNL&ref=plSrch

The thing is that I don't want books that would just tell you what to do, I wanna know why it has to be done that way.

I am no expert in astronomy or AP but thinking that in one year ago I didn't know absolutely anything about this subject and now I manage to get some decent photos of the night sky increased my thirst for knowledge in this domain. I've never been more passionate about something before and that's why I would like to go deeper into this beatiful hoby. I would be very grateful if you could suggest some good books that would help me achive this.

Thanks

Emil

Hi Emil

I have no idea how they compare, but I have a copy of this book

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Astrophotography-Thierry-Legault/dp/1937538435/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1505493949&sr=8-6&keywords=astrophotography

which does a pretty good job with the technical side of things - I think you can have a "look inside" on the Amazon website, so check out the contents to see if it has the things you are interested in. But I found it quite useful and easy to understand.

I also have this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Astrophotography-Mark-Thompson-Photographing/dp/1849073147/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1505493949&sr=8-10&keywords=astrophotography

which is a much lighter tome than the first, but still has some good hints and tips - and seems to be very cheap at the moment!

To be honest, there are a lot of books out there, and I struggled to figure out where to go after "making every photon" but these two have served me well!

Good luck!
