Tips for processing horsehead nebula

Hi all 

Can any one assist with tips for processing the horsehead nebula in PS.  I have 3hrs 40min of good data taken on a modded 1100D.

All stacked and RGB aligned is DSS with flats darks and bias.

As I understand this is quite a Red object with a dark dust cloud and I'm struggling to show the red without blowing out the star or just making the image "too red"

Attached is a JPEG of work so far, am I going in the right direction here?

Also any thoughts on the 2 splodges to the right of the image.  Should they be there?
