Stargazing in Europe (specifically France?)

I'm planning a solo trip to France and one thing I realized just awhile ago, that  since I'm soloing, I could make a stop someplace specifically for stargazing at night.  My goal is to stay most of my time in one or two places in France the entire time (length will be decided on  when I decide I've saved enough) However that doesn't mean I'm above stopping some place out in the country for a night or two to stargaze in a place I've never been before.  Also, would I have any problem bringing over my big astro binoculars? If you're curious this is going to partially be a language building trip. I also want to do some touristy stuff (when in Rome, or in this case Paris....)

There are tons of astronomy possibilities, including many active amateur clubs and professional observatories, some open to the public, in France. At least one forum member here organises astronomy holidays and has some very good equipment to lend to guests: http://www.sunstarfrance.com/index.php?page=/en/astronomy.htm

The map below shows light pollution, you're better off going to the blue areas!

I don't think your binoculars should be a problem - but best not to use them near any military facility!

Bon chance!

There are a number of dedicated astro places in France that take advantage of some great dark skies they have if you wanted access to some serious equipment.

One SGL member,  Olly Penrice runs one, Les Granges http://www.sunstarfrance.com/

Another is Astro Farm.  Andrew Davies runs it.  http://theknowledgeobservatory.com/

I am sure there are probably others as well.

As for bringing your own equipment, that should be no problem.  I have taken telescopes all over Europe.
