I like my eye into the cup when I observe- stray light drives me nuts lol! You can stack these too Gerry. I seem to remember doing that with the 40mm Plossl and the Quark as it pushes the eye relief out quite a way. They are handy things, and work well. John
3 hours ago, Mak the Night said: That's a beautiful looking 40mm Dave. Is it one of the Japanese made Orion Plossls? It's been a long time since Orion sold Japanese made eyepieces I think. Back then they used Vixen and the same manufacturer that University Optics used for their Konig's and orthos. I reckon the Highlight plossls are made by Synta who make Skywatcher, Celestron etc gear although originally I believe Orion had them made in Taiwan. If you are in the USA then the Stirling plossls are worth looking out for: http://store.smartastronomy.com/stsepley12.html

I knew Orion (inter alios) once distributed the five element Plossls that are also now distributed by Baader as the Eudiascopics. I guess that may also be the manufacturer University Optics used. They were the Ultrascopic range which were the same design as the Celestron Ultima and a couple of others. Orion though, and maybe one or two of the other brandings, comissioned 7 element designs at 5mm and 3.8mm with an extra set of lenses in the barrel to achieve acceptable eye relief. These eyepieces (all of them) tend to be referred to as "Pseudo-Masuyamas". There is a CN thread that is worth a read on these and their kin: http://www.cloudynights.com/topic/484063-masuyama/ Edit: Apologies to the original poster for going a bit off topic
