Ladder for large Dobsonian

I often thought about dropping the Dob into a shallow Pit to bring the EP down to a suitable level when the tube is vertical, my 12" is ok but 16-20" inch type could be dropped down just a bit.....the pit being the diameter of the Dob base.......
