would the suggested 127 Mak be a decent performer for white light solar viewing as well as lunar/planetary?

Yes, the 127mak does make a good white light solar scope

should I go higher ? 102 / 127?

Go straight to the 127 as aperture fever will kick in as you want to get more detail.
