Coma Corrector for Old SW 150p

Recommended Posts

Even cropped images still show some coma on my ageing 150p and its starting to really bug me so I'd like to add a coma corrector. After researching this for the past few months it seems I'm facing two issues. First its an old blue tube 150p that only has the 1.25" rack and pinion focuser and as far as I'm aware 1.25" coma correctors don't exist. Secondly even if they did exist I have to remove the eyepiece holder from the focuser draw tube and attach my Canon T-ring directly to the T thread on the draw tube to get enough back focus for imaging so I wouldn't be able to bring my DSLR to focus if I just added a 1.25" coma corrector anyway.

The only answer I've found is to replace the focuser with a new low profile 2" one. The best focuser I've found that's cheap enough to make it viable is this Revelation one

and this only seems to gain me about 10-15mm extra back focus.

I was then going to get the skywatcher coma corrector:

but this is also a reducer and I'm worried this will eat up even more of my limited back focus.

I did notice this Revelation coma corrector with the added bonus it doesn't change the focal length (so shouldn't change the focus position?) and its cheaper:

Has anyone used the Revelation coma corrector for imaging? Is it any good?

At £120 for a new focuser I'm tempted to just sell the scope (along with its old EQ5 that I need to shift anyway) and buy a new 150P-DS but if there's a cost effective way of keeping my current scope that would be the preferred option.

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on what they would do and if there are better focusers or correctors out there that don't break the bank.

Steve.

I guess a new scope is the way to go. I've just registered with Astro Buy and Sell so it looks like I'll put the scope and old mount up for sale and see if I get any takers. At least I've got my 127 mak to use during the interval of selling the old one and getting the new one.
