Two glaring omissions; (unless I missed them);

1. Jupiter and the Galilean moons

2. Stellarium

I highly recommend you download Stellarium onto a PC/laptop, Set up your home (get co-ords from eg google earth) and fast forward the clock to 26th December. Also get a feel for your viewing area so that you know when and where you can seek out specific targets.

Welcome WPK. I never received a train set when I was a child 'cos I'm a girl! I always wanted one. I vote the WOW objects as the Moon then Jupiter and Galilean moons (Saturn too but that is not currently visible). If you have a low horizon view to the southwest from about 5:30 to 6:30pm Mars will be the bright redish dot under the moon. Jupiter will be up (in east) after about 9pm.

I also recommend a thermos of hot chocolate and foil wrapped baked potatoes in your pockets as handwarmers and for their snack value.

It may have already been said but give the moon a look first ,why because you will all be blown away instantly by how many craters and mountain ranges and all the rest you will learn the telescope as well,
