American flyer
NewbiePosted by American flyer, 26 September 2014 · 45 viewsHi AllI bought a Nexstar6 se as I have always fancied looking at the planets and stars anyway I am all set up but it's been quite cloudy.I have tried to focus on other things buildings etc but nothing comes into focus I know there is quite a bit turning the knob but nothing seems to happen. When I turn the knob is the inner mirror supposed to move because this doesn't seem to move at all , even when going from one extreme of focusig the the other. Can anyone advise is it me ? oris the scope faulty.?Best wishesThe flyer
davedownsouth
Hi and welcome to the forum .I have got an 8SE, and you can get it to focus on tree / buildings ~800 yards away, but you have to turn the focus knob ALOT. You probably are best off doing this to start off with, as it helps with getting the RDF aligned with the scope, just be wary that when you come to focus on the Moon (definately start with this as it is easy to find and obvious when the scope is focused properly), you will need to turn the focus knob for what seems like an eternity to get it back into focus. Good scope and I hope it is not faulty and you get some clear nights soon
ronin
Not really intended to focus on most things sitting on the surface of this planet. Thing is if you do manage to wind it enough then you will have to unwind it all over again when you point it skyward. :grin:If you want to line up the finder and the scope pick something about a mile or two away - preferably two. Herbig
Hi, I have a Celestron C8, I use an electricity pylon on the horizon to align my finder, don't find the focusing a problem.I've never looked to see if you can see the mirror move but I would think it movers very slowly so it may not be that noticeable .You should feel some resistance, not a lot though, but if the focuser is loose then I would suspect something is wrong. Hootsitabernacle
How do, when I got mine I had the same problem, the focuser onlyoves slightly when you turn it.. I think it takes 30-odd turns from back to get all the way out...take your time. I got mine by focusing on the moon which is bright and you can't really miss it

Joe_L
I can get my 6se to focus on objects as close as about 5M. Closest focus is fully clockwise. Normal focus is about 30 or more turns of the focus knob back from this. Are you using the star diagonal? And is everything inserted right? If you have an unusual setup or something changing the distance from eyepiece to the mirror then focus distance will be altered.Joe
