Hi Neil, welcome to SGL. I'm not too far away down in Dumfries but grew up down the A713 from you near Castle Douglas. As a child I climbed some of the hills behind loch Doon and from a stargazing point of view you now have some of the UK,s clearest dark skies on your door step so enjoy. Advice wise you'll find the answer to all your queries on here just don't be afraid to ask no matter how daft or complex it may seem. Personally I'd just get out side on a dark night up there and soak it all in, find your way around the sky again then dig out the scope. All the best .
