Processing with Ha, OIII, SII & Hb filters?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, after seeing some excellent images on this site over the past few months from people using Ha(7nm), OIII, SII & Hb filters rather than RGBL filters (which is what I have been using), I thought I would splash out and get myself a set. I ended up buying the four narrow band filers rather than the more standard three as buying all in one go was only an extra £20. At the moment, this is how I process my images:-

1. Check each image using photoshop and bin ones I do not like.

2. Stack the chosen colour and Luminance sets using DSS (using Darks & bias, but not lights as I have not worked out how to do those yet).

3. Align and combine the RGB images using channels in photoshop.

4. Align and add the luminance to the combined RGB image using layers in photoshop.

This is working for me at the moment, although I am sure there are better ways of doing it. So my question is, how do I combine the Ha, OIII & SII (and maybe Hb), preferably in photoshop, but using alternative software if it can not be done using PS?

You would have to align the images first (though you can move them in photoshop but easier to start aligned) then open them in photoshop. Create a new image, make sure it's in rgb mode else change then go to channels. Select the red channel and paste the sulphur into there. Similarly ha goes to green and oxygen to blue. To see the final mix click on the rgb

This mixture is for the hubble palette. The colours will have to be adjusted with selective colour. I think annies actions has a hubble palette creation tool if not annies then noel carboni
