May 20, 2014: Solar morning tea break with very long prom

Recommended Posts

Just dragged the LS35 outside for a quick look. Lower on the western limb a VERY long prom stands out. Initially it just looked like a straight line, higher magnification revealed a shape like a highly cursive A. Further north a trio of proms is visible on the western limb. The southernmost is shaped more or less like a bristly brush (or mowhawk hairstyle) the second like a script capital A, the third like a curling wave. On the eastern limb two proms show, both of low surface brightness. The southern one is a big, very thin, near rectangular arc, with a line of plasma jutting out from its lower eastern corner. The northern one looks like billowing smoke with many thin thread-like structures  within. On the disk I spotted just a solitary sunspot to the west, but many thin filaments criss-cross the disk, especially along a band on the southern hemisphere. Very nice sight.

Nice update Michael  Very hazy day here today and there is no chance of getting the scope out.

We have had quite a bit of thunder and lightening too, so quite an eventful weather day so far
