Maybe a silly question but is Mars safe to look at through my telescope without a filter?

yes
only the sun needs a filter, though the moon can be very bright it cannot damage your eyes
the planets are fine

I managed to see mars last night (early this morning) for the first time in my new scope. I will say, it looked like a red star when I focused in on it , not dissapointed at all I got to see it at least and I'm admitting to saving up for another telescope now as well as going to get eye pieces for my new scope now.

Yeah I managed to see Mars last night, it looked like a red star to me too. I also saw Saturn for the first time, it was amazing!

Mars is always a tricky target, so much smaller than Jupiter. It appears pea shaped at arms length in my 100 mm frac qnd requires good seeing to make out detail. Keep trying and gradually you will make out more detail

That don't sound like Mars.

A bit behind Mars is Saturn, that may be about the colour you describe?

Also it is lower down so would make it difficult owing to the wedge of atmosphere.

I will keep trying and yeah Saturn appears yellow/white cockney, it can be tricky to get.
