New to sketching - first attempt @ Moon

All, new to sketching so please be gentle! Had a bit of free time today as I am on holiday this week.

Thought I would give sketching a go as I am keen to start recording DSOs.

The attached is simple pencil and white chalk. Not particularly great but at least it is practice. Can't tell you the location on the moon surface as the sketch is a bit dodgy so can't find it on a moon map!

All constructive comments welcome, thanks for looking.

Also, I used a piece of hardboard and some masking tape to hold the paper still, worked a treat.

Mark

Good effort on your first attempt Mark, its like I said on another thread lunar sketching is quite hard so getting out in the dark and just trying to sketch anything is good experience.

I'm not sure what area of the moon you've sketched but it looks like quite a complexed area, its easy to bite of more than you can chew when sketching the moon so I always use quite high magnifications to pick out an individual crater, I usually pick something right on the terminator which looks quite striking and just go for it! :)

Saying that, when you've found an area that looks good its worth ID'ing the crater before you start with the pencils.

Looking forward to seeing more after your holidays. :)

Thanks Mike. I just wanted to crack on and see if I even had had it in me tbh. In terms of mag, I had basically maxed the scope out and the quality just wasn't there so ended up using a pretty poor 10mm EP I got with the scope. Anyway, happy that I have given it a try and hoping for better next time.

looks a promising future for your sketching c7.  i tried the moon twice and seriously failed. probably the hardest object to sketch out there imo.

 good luck with your sketching.
