First non-poor seeing night with Jupiter

Recommended Posts

I was able to get out friday night (mar 7) for about three hours. Way more than the usual hour before I started getting numb.

I had was able to see what I think was the GRS, but all the info I could find seems to mention the Jovian ii longitude. So for March it is 208 deg... not sure how that relates without some kind of reference to here??

With my 8" and a 17mm EP with 2x barlow It appeared to be about a 1/4"-1/2" in size, and the longer I viewed the clearer things became. At one point in the large top rust colored belt to the left edge (probably the right because of my mirrored VB) was definitely a swirl that was almost the size of the belt.

Also the first time I had a chair out, will need go without one again!!

So, did I get it right, or was it just something else I saw?

Hi Marv-in,

You could be correct about the GRS. It has been putting on a good display do far by all accountsbj. I have not yet seen it.

Anyway, I see you use Distro Astro. What release are you using? I use 1.0.2

I do like it apart from a few niggles. These are below. Just curious as you may be having the same:-

1. When I run "Explore the Moon" and/or "Virtual Lunar Atlas", I get horizontal bands across the lunar image. Some days it is there, some days partly there, or none at all. It's very strange!

2. Unable to display "Nightshade". All I see is a black screen with a cursor shaped like a broken 'plus' [ + ] symbol for a few seconds, and then I am returned to the desktop.

Philip,

I am running Distro Astro 2.0 on a Compaq mini. I have opened those apps I have not noticed anything strange, but then again I have mostly stuck to KStars. So off the top of my head its a video driver problem. One thing I did have to do was to enable the non-free drivers in the additional drivers utility, which is something I usually do first thing....

The Jovian system ii longitudes are used to predict the position of the GRS on Jupiter, you don't need to worry about them in order to find out when the GRS will be visible.

There's a link posted in the other thread concerning Jupiter that gives the transit times for the GRS (when it is at its midpoint across the face of Jupiter, you've got about 50mins before and after that).

Here are the times for the rest of March:

March 13: 2:05, 12:01, 21:57; 14: 7:52, 17:48; 15: 3:44, 13:40, 23:35; 16: 9:31, 19:27; 17: 5:23, 15:18; 18: 1:14, 11:10, 21:06; 19: 7:01, 16:57; 20: 2:53, 12:49, 22:44; 21: 8:40, 18:36; 22: 4:32, 14:27; 23: 0:23, 10:19, 20:15; 24:6:11, 16:06; 25: 2:02, 11:58, 21:54; 26: 7:49, 17:45; 27: 3:41, 13:37, 23:32;28: 9:28, 19:24; 29: 5:20, 15:16; 30: 1:11, 11:07, 21:03; 31: 6:59, 16:55

 Cheers

Then maybe it wasn't the GRS... What I saw was about 8:30-8:45 PM Mar 7th. That site puts it at 10 PM minus 50 min would be 9PM... so unless there is more wiggle room in there it must have been something else, definitely a swirling spot of some kind and definitely very cool.

Well done if you did see the GRS. I was out with my 200p on Sunday and seeing wasn't bad. I saw a little fine detail in the two bands but not the GRS.

yeah, seeing was a 3 or 4 that night on my skychart. But I went out and sat there from 7pm on. Most of the time it was the usual faint red lines. Not really sure how, but for about 15min I saw it really clear. The two big red lines had two fainter red lines closer to the polls and i caught this swirl near the edge in on of the big lines. Maybe the higher angle in the sky or a patch of clear sky rolled in... what ever happened totally sold me on the whole idea that the longer you look and relax the more luck you will have!

Also just found out that I am about 2 hours from cherry springs state park!!
