Jan 31, 2014: Some nice detail around AR 11967 in H-alpha

Recommended Posts

Just had a brief solar lunch session. It is a bit hazy, and the seeing was rather bad, but the view was certainly worthwhile. A large prom (nearly complete arc could be seen low on the western limb, a few filaments were visible on the surface nearby, but the main attraction was AR 11967, which showed up as a massive complex of sunspots and bright and dark filaments. The latter covered a huge area around the actual spots. This is a real monster. Two fairly modest proms were visible on the eastern limb as well. Not the fireworks of a few days ago, but still very nice. A couple of colleagues braved the cold and also had a look. A frequent passer by asked whether it ever got boring, so I just showed him what was going on at the moment. He was suitably impressed.
