If you do end up getting serious and wanting a good telescope you can get a nice large dobsonion for a very good price these days if you only wish to observe.

Now if you decide Astrophotography is something your interested in then the price will rise considerably if you want some decent kit.

Oh and download the free software Stellarium if you haven't already got it

It will help you see what's up there from the comfort of your nice warm house when the skies are bleak.
