DSLR/Webcam Attachment

I have a Celestron CPC 800 Edge HD and have been connecting my DSLR to it using the Celeston T-Adapter #93644. Now I want to be able to add a barlow into the equation and wondering the best way to do this. Can I add one in utilising the 93644? or should I use something else?

I may also want to use my webcam with this set up including the Barlow, I have the Philips SPC800 with a 1.25 adapter.

ALso after any advice on a good barlow for planetary imaging

Thanks :)

Hi leeroy37,

Can I ask why you wish to use a barlow? Are you trying to image planets? To try and answer your question -AFAIK you will not be able to put the barlow in the imaging train using the Celeston T-Adapter #93644. There are however barlows available with threads on the EP end that  allow a T-ring to be attached, such as this one:- http://www.harrisontelescopes.co.uk/acatalog/SkyWatcher_2x_De-Luxe_Achromatic_Barlow_Lens_.html#a20364 Admittedly this is one of the cheaper ones.

You could then just use your visual back with the diagonal and drop in the barlow with your T-ring and DSLR attached.

Hope that helps.

Ian

Yes I am using a Barlow for planetary imaging.  I don't have a specific need to use the Celestron 93644.  Is there a specific need for this adapter?  As you suggest I could have used the visual back/diagonal with a T adapter like the Celestron 93625, and as you say you can get a barlow version of these T adapters.

Interestingly I had this response from Celestron.....

"Unfortunately this will not work.  The Edge HD system requires the 93644 T-Adapter, however there is no way to attach a barlow with this adapter, and adding the barlow will create too much back focus distance for the camera to come into focus.  In order to shoot with a barlow lens, you have to shoot with a diagonal however this particular OTA may not focus well enough with a diagonal.  Please let us know if you have any other questions."

So my question now is can I get a normal barlow and use the 93625, which will allow me to drop in a webcam and also attach the Canon ring attachment for the DSLR or go for a Barlow T-adapter.....   I don't really want to spend money on something to find it won't work.

Alien 13 what is that?  Is it like a zoom?  Where is it from?

Its the orion camera adapter it allows you to insert a barlow or eyepiece for projection imaging, the sliding part increases the magnification with distance. You might need some spacers at the front end too depends on the amount of travel you have.

Hi Leeroy,

You could perhaps try the following: -

change your visual back adaptor to: -

http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p240_Adaptor-from-SC-thread-to-2--female---2--Visual-Back.html

Or: -

http://www.firstlightoptics.com/adaptors/baader-sct-to-2-inch-adapter.html

Whichever suits your scope best.

Then this will take a 2" Barlow: -

E.G. http://www.firstlightoptics.com/skywatcher-eyepieces/skywatcher-ed-deluxe-2x-two-inch-barlow-lens.html

The Barlow will increase your backfocus requirement a bit... (already at 5.25" as standard) so you will need at least an 80mm extension tube: - (possibly more)

http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p161_TS-2--Extension-Tube---80mm-Length.html

This will accept either a 2" Tee adaptor: -

http://www.harrisontelescopes.co.uk/acatalog/T_Adaptor_2_.html

with your tee ring attached... alternatively, if your current tee ring adaptor is the 1.25" version then all you need to do is insert the standard 2" - 1.25" eyepiece adaptor... which will then take your current tee adaptor.

You may need to play around a little with the length of the extension tube in order to achieve the correct spacing.

It's a lot to hang off the back of the scope though.

You could use the diagonal, with the barlow in it, however, this will not give you as sharp a picture on your camera, if you can even get the camera body to fit between the OTA tube on the diagonal that is... might be a bit tight.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Best regards.

Sandy.
