December 6, 2013: very quick solar H-alpha session and MV 20mm first light

Recommended Posts

Despite having a bit of flu, I just had to have a 5 minute look at the sun between wintry showers, if only to test the MaxVision 20mm 68 deg EP that arrived yesterday. The sun showed a series of filaments, snaking their way across the surface along most of the southern hemisphere. I also spotted a bright, complicated knot of activity near the centre. A semicircle of plasma stood out on the western limb, near the equator, and another lower, flatter arc could be seen to the south. Southwards on the eastern limb a low ridge stood out. Quite a bit of activity nicely seen through the 20mm. Eye relief is a touch tight with glasses, but certainly manageable for solar, when there is no urgent need to see the whole FOV. The EP seems every bit as sharp as the 24mm.

Well pleased, both with getting a brief glimpse of the sun, and with the new EP
